whoa. hi. i haven’t written in a while, and so much is happening in the town, the country, and the world. i hope everyone is doing ok and getting through each day joyfully, as much as at all possible.

i very much encourage you to make sure your voter registration is up to date.

your vote matters and there are so many reasons to vote and to vote for positions that you may not even think make a difference, but they do!! like your vote mattering to this person, Sarah Taber, running for Agriculture Commissioner. And right here in Carrboro, Cristobal Palmer is running for town council and needs your vote. The list goes on and on but I will stop there because hopefully I have made my point.

OMG! we are having a CUSTOMER APPRECTION PARTY!! if you are old school and remember these parties from the past, we are mixing it up. the party, for one, is on a SATURDAY, SEPT 21, (instead of a sunday) and will be more of an evening show than a day party/kid friendly hang.

there will be a couple bands, a couple noise makers, and a couple djs! so more of a hang in the normal parts of the bar than a parking lot party. we do plan to be outside, weather permitting, for the first part of the day but come in the front for wristbands! the event is free to the public. In lieu of free food to our customers, we will be donating 25% of proceeds of the day to UNRWA a relief fund for palestinian refugees and 25% of proceeds to TABLE, feeding children here locally.

Again, this will be an inside and outside event, weather permitting. 6pm ish- midnight ish Get a wristband to get drinks. Cash always helps the speed of your bartenders at these events. Hope you can make it!

Hey, how are you?

It’s just impossible to think that everyone is ok. I am not an eloquent writer by any stretch, but I want to send deep healing vibes to my community today. There’s just absolutely no way that everyone reading this in and around Chapel Hill and Carrboro and the triangle at large wasn’t gutted and scared on Monday. Change needs to come.

It’s weird to transition into a normal OCSC email, I want to acknowledge that and then…. do just that??

As you can see above, I will be hosting an amazing line up at Kings next Thursday to celebrate Hopscotch 2023!! It’s free!! Come on over if you can- there’s always lots to do without getting passes.. of course, getting passes is super fun too! I feel very glad that Hopscotch has continued to happen in Raleigh and I’m super here to support it!!

These stories, written over a period of 30 years or so, are all based on true events, but they are written in what Ruy calls symbolic prose to make them exciting and thrill the reader. OCSC's 21st Bday!!

HELLO!

I am so excited to announce the line ups for our little 21st birthday celebration!!

Early shift = sometime between 4-9pm and late shift 9-2am

PIPE & LUD will perform live outback on SATURDAY between 5-7pm

*All check-ins all weekend will be at the front door!

There will be plenty of outdoor space, the djs will play from outside too but you will be able to hear what they are putting down even if you are sitting at the bar. The pool table will be open and you can dance anywhere you want to (always) -but what i’m saying is there’s no designated dance floor.

We are also pleased to announce THE RETURN OF GOLDFISH FRIDAYS!! (IYKYK), we will have some amazing new OCSC merchandise for sale, and we have a couple other fun things up our sleeves.

PLEASE KNOW THIS!>> we would SO appreciate if you brought cash for these events- it makes things go so much faster for the bartenders.

In all serious, as a staff, we really thought out how this would affect our community that is OCSC-all of us! It has been such a part of the cultural identity of the bar- it feels weird, we feel a little naked- but we are ultimately excited about the change!

Ah June, you glorious month!

I love it for its long days and obviously because it's the best month to have a birthday!

(halfway to the holidays!!)

Also, we celebrate FATHERS! Happy fathers day to anyone who is celebrated as one!

Especially my dad, George, and my husband, Charles! 2 of the greats!

OCSC APRIL 2022

It’s been a long time since I sent out a proper email with rock shows and updates and birthday wishes.

I still haven’t settled into a routine since we have reopened; frankly I am always waiting for something bad to happen again. Maybe it won’t, maybe it will, but I’m relishing these moments right now.

 

One odd thing to our schedule this month- we will be hosting a private party here at OCSC this Sunday, April 3 and will not open to the public until 6pm versus the normal 4pm. 

So OCSC’s hours on Sunday, April 3 are 6pm-2am

OCSC "Happy" New Year 2022?

Hello, happy new year.

I should have written this sooner, my apologies for not- OCSC is closed as of last Wednesday and we will remain closed through at least this Thursday, Jan 6.

This last year has been better than the last, so that’s something! As always, we just can’t wait to get back to doing what we do, full blast- but for now, we wait…

Here we are. December 2021, crazy.

Holiday hours: OCSC will be closed 12/24, 12/25, 12/31 & 1/1/22

We agonized over New Year’s Eve and made the decision to close. We all hope so much to be FULLY BACK to BONKERS DANCE PARTY New Year’s 2022/23!!

Otherwise, we are open 4-2am daily and if there’s a basketball game earlier than 4pm, we will open 30 minutes prior to the game.

I want to personally thank all of you who have been coming back and making OCSC the place we want it to be. This year has had its ups and downs for sure so thanks for dealing with all the different protocols and ideas we have tried. We love you guys and love BEING OPEN to hang with you!

OCSC (not enough ROCK) TOBER.

Well, we just had the best time on the 26th for our 20th… Thanks to all who participated!! Especially past & present staff. I was a great rehearsal for OCSC’s 21st bday!

A couple important things off the top before you get bored:

OCSC WILL BE CLOSED for a private party 7:30pm-2am, Friday, October 22. We will be open to the public 4pm-7:30pm

OCSC WILL BE CLOSED SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31st (HALLOWEEN) We can’t do our thing and we aren’t doing it halfway.

Billy was thrilled to make those TIKI DRINKS so much that he is bringing them to us AGAIN!

4th annual GO WITH THE FLOW Menstrual Product Drive & Benefit

Thursday, OCT 21 7pm-10pm

We're back! Join us October 21st from 7-10pm at OCSC to gather menstrual products for our community.

We'll gather on OCSC's lovely back patio. Remember to mask up in the bar and not to linger inside.

State Sen. Natalie Murdock will join us to talk about her work on SB 698, the End Menstrual Poverty Act.

While other states and whole countries (Kenya was first in 2004!) have eliminated the tax on menstrual products, North Carolina continues to tax these goods as luxuries.

These products are *necessities* that are often difficult to afford for our low-income neighbors. Students even miss school because they can't afford products. Many federal assistance programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants and Children) don’t allow the use of EBT for these products despite their classification as medical devices. The IRS does not classify female products as medical devices, thus blocking women from buying them with pre-tax dollars in both flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts.

We'll be collecting all sorts of menstrual products: Tampons, pads, cups. We'll be serving specialty benefit cocktails and listening to our awesome period-themed playlist.

This year's drive benefits Inter-Faith Council for Social Service UNC Horizons Program, Freedom House Recovery Center, Carolina Cupboard: Community Food Pantry, 10% of proceeds from the bar will go to the purchase of additional items, as well as any cash donations.

Can't make it to the event? Drop your donations off at OCSC all week during open hours from 4pm-2am.

YOUR VOTE MATTERS! like really, really matters in these local elections. Here’s info on how to vote early. DON’T MISS OUT on YOUR CHANCE TO REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!

STARTING SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23 AT 4PM-

OCSC WILL REQUIRE PROOF OF VACCINATION FOR ENTRY.

WE WILL ACCEPT YOUR CARD OR PHOTO OF CARD. We will also start serving inside at a limited capacity. Between now and then, please bring your card to show the bartenders- all advance showing of cards would be ever so helpful!

We will be encouraging people ordering/up from their seat to wear masks. We really miss serving friends inside and look forward to doing this again. Both back patios will remain as is for lots of outdoor space. We are excited to make this step forward and will of course stay on top of numbers and trends and close the inside again if we need to do so.

Well, OCSC turns 20 on Sunday and knock on wood, the weather looks good enough to say - LET’S CELEBRATE! Around 5-11pm some past and present bartenders will be spinning records for us to enjoy! ALL festivities will take place outside and we will have an even more extended outdoor space.

PLEASE ONLY 21 & OLDER for this hang- it’s just not time for the kiddos to be up here with limited space and no vaccine yet.

PLEASE WEAR A MASK AT ALL TIMES INSIDE, use the front door for entering and exiting, AND REMEMBER NOT TO LINGER INSIDE at all.

Drink specials including…throw back drink prices from 2001 on $1.50 PBRs and $3.50 house highballs! WHAT?????

If we are in a safer place next year, I promise, this is only a warmup to the party I will throw for our 21st!!

Anyway, come on out on Sunday or show your love any time all weekend!!
